I live in Arizona and find it difficult to garden year-round due to extreme temperatures. I began planting indoor plants, like herbs and spices, and found that to be very rewarding. However, I really wanted to plant outside, but found the hard soil to be very difficult to work around. That is when I discovered hydroponic farming and realized how easy it was to get started. I read many books and did plenty of online research to assist in making my hydroponic garden a success. One of the books I found particularly helpful was The Hydroponic Garden: Growing Without Soil. Starting a strawberry garden for hydroponic strawberries was surpisingly simple. I also love hydroponic tomatoes and hydroponic vegetables. While hydroponic growing did not happen effortlessly because of this book, it did make it much easier.

Why Does Hydroponics Work?
Plant researchers discovered that the soil itself is not crucial to plant growth. In fact, the soil simply acts as a nutrient reservoir and when water is added to the soil the mineral nutrients dissolve leading the plant roots to absorb them. In hydroponic farming, the mineral nutrients are placed into the plant’s water supply. Practically any land growing plant can be grown with hydroponics, although there are some that thrive better compared to others.
This concept of growing plants without soil has been around since the days of the Aztecs and Babylonians. However, the modern method of nutrient solution replacement that is in use today for a hydroponic farm was developed around 1800s.
